The Groene Hart Ziekenhuis (GHZ) in Gouda was developed as a Design & Build project, where design and construction preparation were seamlessly integrated. The project encompassed the integral development of urban planning, architecture, building structures and technical installations. Thanks to efficient collaboration between specialists, the hospital was fully designed and ready for construction within just 15 months.

A welcoming and patient-centred environment

The GHZ plays an important societal role by providing high-quality care in an environment where the human scale is central. The involvement of medical professionals and end-users was crucial from the outset. Through expert groups, they actively contributed to the design of their future working environment, resulting in a building that fully meets their needs and future developments in healthcare.

Optimal integration into the environment

The master plan for the GHZ was developed according to a concentration plan, providing space for additional commercial facilities in the future. Architecturally, the building features a brick base with a light, metal façade. The urban design not only creates a functional hospital but also enhances the spatial quality of the surroundings.

Smart and flexible design choices

The hospital design offers generic and flexible solutions. All outpatient clinic rooms are identical, facilitating future adaptations. The nursing wards are based on a modular concept, allowing spaces to be easily adjusted to changing care needs. This design strategy demonstrates craftsmanship and thoughtful architecture that contribute to the building's sustainability and longevity.

Colour and atmosphere as healing elements

The interior design is based on three themes: 'Gouda: city & countryside', 'nature & landscape' and 'flower fields'. These themes have been translated into colour palettes that provide calm and orientation for patients and staff. Blue dominates in the outpatient clinics, yellow in clinical settings and purple in special functions. This use of colour contributes to a healthy and pleasant healthcare environment.

Future-proof

In 2021, new housing for the Clinical Chemistry and Medical Microbiology laboratories was realised as a precursor to phase 2 of the new build. By 2035, the entire GHZ will be renewed and fully meet the requirements of a core hospital. The building is prepared for future developments, with short walking routes, a clear layout and optimal work processes for medical professionals. The Groene Hart Ziekenhuis is a model of forward-thinking healthcare architecture, combining health, sustainability and the human scale.
