Hospital Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis is the only top clinical hospital in the inner ring of Amsterdam, located in the multicultural Oosterpark district. A modern, patient-friendly hospital sitting literally and figuratively in the heart of society. In the period 1987-2003, the old parts of the complex were demolished in phases and replaced by new buildings. The new buildings included an underground parking garage as well as a new chapel in the Romanesque style. After 2003, several departments were rebuilt including a state-of-the-art Emergency Room and a family-friendly children's clinic.
In collaboration with interior designers OTH, the first step in the renovation of the wards was put in motion. The Anna Pavilion (mother and child department) and a new pharmacy are currently under construction.
The hospital takes the shape of a rectangular block and has an area of 60,000 m2, a large hospital but its size does not show once inside. There is quite a lot of emphasis placed on the human side of the hospital. From the high rise to the Oosterpark entrance, a long central skylight is created that binds all the buildings together. This provides good logistics and a clear, open structure that allows visitors to easily find their way around. The result is a flexible hospital with a main structure that can also accommodate other adaptations.
Due to the consistency between the different building parts, façade construction, upright structure and colour of the walls, the hospitalfits well into the existing buildings around the Oosterpark.
