Innovative design for a complex urban renovation
View the entire projectThe hospital pharmacy of the OLVG in Amsterdam has been renewed, expanded and renovated. The result is a well-thought-out design in which efficiency, hygiene and safety are combined with experience, transparency and recognisability.
The internal renovation and expansion of the hospital pharmacy were necessary due to a lack of space and stricter legislation. The pharmacy plays a crucial role in the purchasing, preparation, delivery and quality control of medicines, handling around 200,000 medication orders per year.
EGM architects designed a pharmacy where hard and soft requirements seamlessly merge. The lab forms the recognisable central area, surrounded by offices, cleanrooms and logistics areas. The use of large glass surfaces and natural light creates a transparent and clear working environment. Employees have a view of their colleagues and the work process, while patients get a glimpse into the world behind their medication.
The pharmacy was given a central location in the hospital, strategically situated near departments that work closely with the pharmacists. The renovation took place without closing the hospital. The pharmacy was renewed in two phases, with smart interim solutions to ensure continuity. The limited space in this urban location required precise collaboration, clear communication and tight planning.
EGM and OLVG have been working together since 1988. The master plan, developed at that time, still forms a solid basis for new projects. Recent results of this sustainable collaboration include the outpatient pharmacy (2013), the hospital pharmacy and the Anna pavilion (2014). With the renewed hospital pharmacy, EGM demonstrates how complex urban projects can create spaces where both healthcare professionals and patients feel seen and heard.
