The collaboration between EGM architects and the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG) dates back many years. Since 1988, EGM has been closely involved in various new construction, renovation, and expansion projects. The OLVG is characterised by an innovative and forward-thinking approach that responds to the constantly changing healthcare needs. The design supports this dynamic and provides space for growth and development.

Clear structure, smart connections

The central light corridor naturally connects all buildings, from the high-rise to the entrance on the Oosterpark. This clear structure provides a logical and intuitive routing for patients, visitors, and staff and also offers flexibility for future adjustments.

Hospitality at its core

As the only general top clinical hospital in Amsterdam, the OLVG emphasises hospitality and care for everyone. The human scale is palpable everywhere: the hospital remains manageable and never feels overwhelmingly large. The careful coherence between the different building parts, the refined facade design, and the harmonious use of colour ensure that the design blends seamlessly with the existing buildings around the Oosterpark.

Continuous development

The transformation of the complex took place in phases. Old buildings made way for modern new constructions, without interrupting the continuity of care. An underground parking garage offers practical solutions for visitors. The addition of a chapel in Romanesque style adds a calm and reflective space. Advanced facilities were also realised, such as a modern Emergency Department, a polyclinic pharmacy, a hospital pharmacy, and the Anna Pavilion, a new mother and child centre. Recently, the complete transformation of the Hotfloor, the operating theatre complex, including two spectacular ‘floating’ hybrid operating rooms, became a crowning achievement, showcasing the OLVG’s continuous growth and development.
