The new pharmacy of the OLVG hospital in Amsterdam is officially opened on Thursday, 12th June. With the completion of the rebuilding of the pharmacy, the hospital now has two pharmacies: the renovated facility on the first floor and the new outpatient pharmacy located on the ground floor. In October 2014 the new Anna pavilion will also be completed. Like the hospital and the outpatient pharmacy, this new mother and child center, is also designed by EGM architecten.
The expansion and the new facility were needed to meet the latest and stringent laws and regulations. According to the hospital’s requirements, more space was needed to serve other clients from the outpatient pharmacy as well.
Efficiency, hygiene, safety, complexity, but also user experience and spaciousness are key words in the design of the pharmacy. EGM architecten made an effort to balance these clinical and human factors in its design. Thus resulting in a pharmacy in which the laboratory was designed as a recognizable inner area surrounded by offices, clean rooms and logistical areas with plenty of glass and daylight.
The rebuilding of the pharmacy is done 'going concern', which means the hospital remains in full operation. EGM architecten has experience with such complex assignments that require interim solutions. Collaboration,communication and strict schedules are of the utmost importance. Especially when it comes to limited space in an inner city location, like this.
EGM architects is an experienced pharmacy designer that is fine-tuning its broad knowledge every time, inspired by the high demands the users place on the facilities. Pharmacies are inextricably linked to hospitals. But each pharmacy offers different services; sometimes they facilitate a production pharmacy and a laboratory, such as in the OLVG, other times the offering is much more limited. Other pharmacies are decentralized from their hospital. A recent example is the A15 pharmacy in Gorinchem, which is the production pharmacy for the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.
