OLVG East, located in the heart of Amsterdam, is undergoing a major renovation and transformation. This intervention is essential to future-proof the hospital and ensure operational continuity. Within the complex urban context, with a focus on safety and sustainability, EGM has developed a strategic renovation plan that integrates continuity of care, operational security, and societal relevance.

Strategic choice for renovation

The decision to renovate within the existing footprint was driven by the limited available space and the necessity to keep healthcare operations uninterrupted. Among various scenarios – ranging from full new construction to minimal renovation – this approach provided the highest guarantee of 100% operational continuity and safety. EGM carefully considered factors such as patient safety, logistical efficiency, sustainability, and a healing environment for both staff and patients. The operating complex is no longer a sterile clinical setting but a workspace with character, atmosphere, and a distinctly Amsterdam identity.

Innovative design solutions

To enable renovation without disrupting healthcare processes, EGM devised a meticulously planned ‘phased shift strategy.’ This began with the creation of two new hybrid operating theatres in the atrium, making smart use of previously unused space. These theatres were designed as 'floating clouds', clad in recycled PET felt for sound absorption and a sense of visual lightness. Natural daylight, entering through windows, supports a healthy circadian rhythm for both staff and patients.

Flexibility and temporary facilities

During the renovation, additional square metres were created by constructing a temporary building to house essential functions such as recovery rooms, changing facilities, and sterile storage. This two-storey volume, strategically placed in an inner courtyard, provided the necessary buffer capacity and ensured that construction work did not impact healthcare services. Thanks to dust- and air-tight partitions, disruption was kept to an absolute minimum.

Healthy and inspiring environment

The design prioritised the creation of a human-centred and welcoming environment. The new operating theatres and associated logistics corridors draw inspiration from the Amsterdam surroundings, featuring colours reminiscent of canal houses and artworks by leading Amsterdam artists. This gives each space a distinct identity, making the environment intuitive and recognisable for staff.

Sustainability and greenery

A new technical floor with a green façade was constructed on top of the renovated building. The roof provides space for relaxation, with planting that contributes to a calm and natural atmosphere. This outdoor space offers staff a retreat from the daily intensity of hospital work. As a prominent building in a residential area, the new façade also ensures a more pleasant streetscape for local residents.

Valuable outcomes

The renovation of OLVG East demonstrates that complex transformations within a 24/7 hospital environment are possible without compromising the continuity of care. The chosen approach has resulted in a safe, efficient, and sustainable hospital building, where both patients and staff benefit from a well-considered and healthy environment. This project proves that inner-city renovations are not only feasible but also offer significant societal and economic value.
