Today, the new hybrid operating theatre at Jeroen Bosch Hospital has officially opened. This type of operating theatre is equipped with built-in X-ray equipment, allowing specialists to view inside the body during surgery. Thirteen years ago, JBZ became one of the first hospitals in the country to introduce a hybrid operating theatre. Both that operating theatre and the then-new hospital building, as well as this new operating theatre, were designed by EGM architects.
"Staff have been intensively involved in the development of the new hybrid operating theatre from the very beginning," says surgical assistant Joëlle de Ronde. "We mapped out the challenges of the previous theatre and implemented significant improvements." The new hybrid OR is located in the space of an existing operating theatre, including adjoining rooms, and is substantially larger. According to vascular surgeon Olivier Koning, this opens up new possibilities: "For instance, the entrance and exit have been relocated to streamline patient entry, improving usability and saving time."
Several technical improvements have been made compared to the old operating theatre. For example, patients and team members are exposed to less radiation, and patients receive reduced amounts of contrast dye, which is safer as these agents sometimes cause side effects. The new OR also consumes less energy. The air supply system is more energy-efficient, and improved air circulation throughout the room creates a larger working area around the operating table.
Vascular surgeon Olivier Koning is enthusiastic about the technological advancements. "Large screens on each side of the patient allow us to zoom in more effectively and to project and view previously taken medical images during surgery." The equipment in the hybrid OR greatly supports specialized work. “I expect that the new hybrid operating theatre will be more user-friendly and will enhance the well-being of both patients and staff. That is ultimately what we are here for."
