The transformation and new construction of Building 110 at the Johan Willem Friso (JWF) Barracks in Assen has recently been completed. Designed by EGM architects, this exclusive health centre is designated solely for military personnel. The design merges functionality with aesthetics, serving as a striking focal point at the entrance to the barracks. The new health centre, which has tripled in size with the new construction, features a modern appearance while incorporating references to the area's historical character.
At the heart of the building lies the Geneva Cross, a symbol of protection in wartime. This iconic form is evident not only in the building’s layout but also in the perforations of the corten steel louvres adorning the façade. Each arm of the cross accommodates a specific function, including a patio, entrance, atrium, and winter garden.
The corten steel clad façade of the ground floor echo the historical buildings along the canal in Assen. In contrast, the transparent upper floor, with light aluminium accents and large window frames, adds a contemporary touch. The building meets stringent BENG standards and is equipped with PV panels and a green sedum roof. This design not only enhances water retention but the temperature regulating characteristics of the sedum also boost the efficiency of the solar panels.
The design prioritises tranquillity, transparency, and clarity. Clear pathways, ample daylight from glass façades and skylights, and the use of natural materials , featuring a lot of wood, contribute to a ‘healing environment.’ Indoor hydroculture gardens further enrich the building’s serene and green atmosphere. The result is high-quality healthcare architecture where functionality and aesthetics blend seamlessly. The health centre was architecturally completed in December 2024, with commissioning scheduled for spring 2025, with its opening scheduled for spring of 2025.
