On July 1, Amsterdam UMC took an important step towards the realization of Europe’s largest Cardiovascular Intervention Center by signing the construction contract with MedicomZes and Hanab Installation Technology. EGM architects designed an innovative expert center with a strong focus on pioneering care and the sustainable employability of healthcare staff. The renovation is incorporated with respect for the characteristic building.
The center covers 6,000 square meters and will be located at AMC. It will be equipped with nine ultramodern cardiac catheterization and intervention rooms, as well as a unique interventional MRI suite. THere will be the most modern MRI scanner for the treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, a worldwide groundbreaking development. In the adjacent outpatient clinic, patients will find consultation, examination, and diagnostic rooms, as well as the Sports Cardiology Center: the leading center for (elite) sports cardiology in the Netherlands.
For years, we have dreamed of having one Heart Center at a single location, and now the largest and most beautiful Heart Center in Europe is becoming a reality.

Patients will enjoy comfortable, calming lounges where they are welcomed, prepared, and cared for. Depending on their treatment, this may take place in a bed, a comfortable recliner, or in a relaxing “active” lounge with reading tables and a coffee bar. In this way, we create an environment that reduces stress and enhances the well-being of every patient.
Plenty of attention has also been devoted to staff. The design prioritizes well-being and job satisfaction: clear routes, an intuitive layout, and ample meeting spaces make collaboration easier and safer. The “off-stage” staff areas are designed with lots of natural light and views, so employees can recharge, catch up, and relax. Such pleasant surroundings are especially important in a demanding and responsible work environment. Together, we are building the future of healthcare.
The first phase of the expert center is scheduled for completion at the end of 2026. Phase two, featuring the new outpatient clinic, will follow in the first quarter of 2028.
