Dutch contribution to ideal Turkish care model

Dutch Health Architects advise in development of healthcare design

How can we live in a healthier way? Create a design in which care can discretely support generations to be part of society with or without ailments. How can a hospital design also contribute to the wellbeing of its users? These three themes will be discussed in a four day workshop organized by the Izmir University of Economics in collaboration with Dutch Health Architects from 8th April to 11th April 2013 in Izmir Turkey.

Approximately 90 students of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design will join the workshop, excursions and lectures. Introducing students in ‘designing for healthcare related to urban renewal’ is the main goal in order to achieve a contribution to the Turkish ideal model where healthcare is in reach for everyone. This initiative is a result of the Trade mission to Turkey in November last year with Prime Minister Rutte of The Netherlands, which was attended by Dutch Health Architects. Bayrakli Izmir

The case study is based on the district Bayrakli in the province of Izmir; an area with a rich and social history. The workshop will lead the students from informal healthcare systems to modern hospitals: 1. Modern hospital design, 2. Healthcare - Lifestyle - Habitat and 3. Informal healthcare. The workshop is part of the university program. Results will be presented and exhibited on 11th April. Victor de Leeuw and Maurits Algra of Dutch Health Architects will conduct the workshop and will evaluate the outcome with the students.

Urban Alchemy

The students will learn to understand the urban setting, break it down and reconstruct it into something new and to use architecture as a catalyst, to understand the urban matter, the social fabric, hidden relations and secret temporal metamorphosis. All of this in order to achieve urban transformation and revitalization. Izmir expo 2020: “Health for all”

Turkey’s health reforms have achieved concrete results in recent years. For example:
• Average life expectancy has increased by 3 years.
• Infant mortality has dropped by 64 percent.
• The whole population has been vaccinated.
• Access to health services has broadened (to 97 percent from 60 percent).

These impressive achievements prove that the “Health for All” ideal is not only possible, but that the Turkish Model of Health Access is qualitative, productive and sustainable. By making students acquainted with Dutch healthcare, Dutch Health Architects wants to make a contribution to the development of Turkish healthcare.
