Jasper Holtus: Architectural Engineering TU Delft

“I certainly look back positively on my time here.”

After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at TU Delft, I wanted to gain some relevant work experience before starting my Master’s degree. I was curious to see what working at an architecture firm was actually like, as this was something I felt was missing from the standard Bachelor’s curriculum. Since I had previously made a mock-up for an EGM design, I was already familiar with the firm, and it seemed like an interesting place to do my internship.

My internship started with digitising an old EGM project: the Peugeot Tower in Buenos Aires. This beautiful project was a great introduction to the architecture firm and its way of working. During my internship, I was able to work on many different projects, each with a different architect, at a different scale, and at a different stage of the design process. I also had the opportunity to join several site visits and client presentations. It was very valuable to experience these aspects of architectural practice during my internship as well.

The project I learned the most from was a housing project for the elderly in Schiedam. The architects I worked with involved me closely in the design process and gave me a great deal of freedom in developing my own ideas. I was able to carry out various studies on the building, including its façade, floor plans, and materials. For one of these studies, I even had the opportunity to 3D-print the entire site.

Overall, I learned a great deal during my time at EGM, but EGM was also a very pleasant place to work. My colleagues were great to work with, and everyone was always willing to help whenever I needed it. I therefore look back very positively on my time at EGM.
