With the Zaanstad Judicial Complex, EGM delivered the second project in the Netherlands to be realized in accordance with the RVB BIM Standard.
Compliance with the RVB BIM Standard requires continuously up-to-date building information products to be made available and processed, such as building models and drawings containing the information prescribed by the standard. EGM’s coordinating role as BIM model manager was crucial in this process.
EGM’s 3D models, together with the associated 3D models developed by the partners within the Pi2 consortium, were continuously assessed against one another. Verification systems were used to monitor and validate the models against the RVB BIM requirements set out in the Schedule of Requirements.
Specifying the BIM standard
The Central Government Real Estate Agency (RVB) uses Building Information Modelling (BIM, or Building Information Model) to collect concrete, reliable and uniform information about its building portfolio. To ensure this remains the case in the future, the RVB has established the RVB BIM Standard. For the Zaanstad Judicial Complex, the RVB applied the RVB BIM Standard as a performance requirement in the output specification.
By engaging in discussions about why the RVB BIM Standard is so important and maintaining an open dialogue with the RVB, we gained a better understanding of the client’s requirements throughout the design development process. This enabled the Pi2 consortium, with EGM as lead architect, to integrate the RVB BIM Standard effectively and coordinate it more efficiently within the project.
Broader application of the RVB BIM standard
The RVB is no longer the only organization using the RVB BIM Standard. Various clients, including hospitals, are adopting the standard or a variant of it. The RVB BIM Standard provides current, concrete and reliable information about buildings under management. This ensures that everyone works with the same information and encourages all parties to collaborate in a structured manner.
The Zaanstad Judicial Complex was developed within the Pi2 consortium, a collaboration between Ballast Nedam and Royal Imtech. EGM was responsible for the architecture of the complex as well as the technical development of the design in a BIM model.
