The Ikazia Hospital is a place where health is central in all aspects of life. Where care does not stop at the hospital door, but extends further—to home, to the neighborhood, and to the network surrounding the patient. With this new ambition, Ikazia wants to invite and support people in Rotterdam South and beyond to improve their health. The renovated entrance will strengthen this invitation and ensure that a wide range of services are easily accessible.
Challenge
The design challenge is to merge two separate access points — the original entrance and the new walkway from the parking garage (both designed by EGM) — into one seamless, connecting, and accessible whole where everyone feels welcome.
Ikazia close and nearby
EGM is creating a vibrant ‘inner square’ as a central meeting heart in the entrance area. A new, multi-functional reception concept is coming here for hospital functions such as visitor information, registration, security, and patient guidance. In this ‘inner square,’ there will be a place offering information and support for healthier living and an accessible catering spot. It will become a meeting point where care providers, neighborhood assistants, visitors, and patients can meet informally. The entire center will bring the two entrances together and transform them into one beautiful and inviting area. Simultaneously, a dynamic balance is created here between public meeting places and quiet, private work environments.
Accessible and inclusive
The new entrance area will become an integrated space with a clear Ikazia identity. The rooms feel warm and recognizable through material use and culturally inspired patterns that embrace the richness and diversity of all visitors. This creates a true healing environment for staff, partners, and visitors alike.
Ikazia Hospital and EGM architects are continuing to refine the design. According to the schedule, the renovation will begin in early 2027.
