Transformation of healthcare architecture

Vision Giuseppe Lacanna presented at International Conference Rebel Matters Radical Patterns

At the international conference Rebel Matters Radical Patterns 21-22 March 2013 at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Genoa (at aula magna San Salvatore, Genoa), Giuseppe Lacanna showed how healthcare architecture is leading a radical transformation.

What is the meaning of Architecture nowadays? What is its role within the contemporary society? Radical architecture and advanced architecture are terms that in the XIXth century related to a breakage with the reality and projection towards the future. The international conference Rebel Matters Radical Patterns conference aims at outlining possible future perspectives in the world of architecture, starting from a radical contemporary approach. The contribution of Giuseppe Lacanna, moving from the statement of the death of the values of contemporary architecture, shows how healthcare architecture can represent a future scenario in the world of architecture itself. A new Renaissance and radical revolution is already ongoing in the world of northern European healthcare architecture.

Paper

Lacanna’s paper presentation ‘’L’era dell’antiarchitettura e la rivoluzione dell’edilizia pubblica / The era of anti-architecture and the revolution of the public buildings’’ outlined the characters of what can be called a new Renaissance, a ‘radical revolution’ which is ongoing in the world of contemporary architecture and passes through the design of healthcare facilities.

This conference, which is part of a series of international seminars, aimed at outlining possible future perspectives in the world of architecture and urban planning, conveying a new architectural, urban and contemporary design approach based on complicity, innovation and relational involvement as a possible alternative to the iconographic marketing and traditional architectural tools (form, typology, function, etc.).

Visions

The contribution of Giuseppe found space within the session ‘Visions’, addressed to the greatest potential of the advanced architectural ideas and the capacity to anticipate the changes, to overcome the present reality and the actual conditions, and to translate these experiences into a full vision.
Among the key speakers of this international event there were prestigious names of the modern architectural avantgard of the XXth century: Peter Cook (founder of Archigram), Andrea Branzi (founder of Archizoom associati), Cristina Toroldo di Francia, Adolfo Natalini and Piero Frassinelli (founders of Superstudio).
